At the core of USIIA's membership are the companies and individuals engaged in Internet commerce, content and connectivity. The Association was created through the efforts of more than eighty Founding Members who joined in the early months and helped to shape the organization's policies, direction and programs. Other special members of the Association are our Emeritus Members, who are honored for their contribution to the success and growth of the Association. USIIA is primarily comprised of organizational and corporate, though we do retain a small number of individual members as well. The membership of USIIA consists of representatives of a broad cross-section of the Internet industry: Internet Service Providers, aggregators and wholesalers comprise 43.5 percent of the membership, the largest single group. This includes only ISPs who pay direct dues to USIIA -- the thousands of ISPs that are in turn served by USIIA members do receive much of our information and support, but are not counted as members. Service companies -- billing and back office services, delivery support companies and legal/professional services for ISPs and information services -- comprise 21 percent of the membership. Information Services -- from major web sites and web hosting services to news and information sites -- comprise 13 percent of the membership. Media editors and reporters are not included among the dues-paying members, but comprise 9 percent of the membership. Software companies engaged in security, billing, interface, graphic production and other systems comprise 6 percent of the membership. Academic and Non-Profit members -- other Internet associations, institutions of higher education, and charitable groups -- are 5 percent of the membership. Government employees comprise 3 percent of the membership. Hardware companies comprise 0.5 percent of the membership.
